Snowshoe Mountain Biking
Snowshoe West Virginia and the many
other great
places in Pocahontas County offer miles and
miles of mountain biking trails and great places
to cycle. Mountain bikes are permitted on most
of the National Forest roads and almost all of
the trails within the Monongahela National
Forest and Seneca State Forest. Although few
trails have been specially designated as West
Virginia Mountain Biking trails, many of the
great hiking trails are perfect for mountain
biking and offer some great views and
challenges. Wilderness areas such as the
Cranberry Wilderness are exceptions as the land
in these areas is conserved and managed for
little disruption to their fragile ecosystems,
therefore mountain biking is not permitted. Some
of the more popular hiking trails were once
railroad grades and as such offer a variety of
low to steep grades for beginners and experts.
Some favorites are The Greenbrier River Trail,
the Allegheny Trail, and the Pocahontas Trail.
The Cranberry Backcountry is a popular spot
among cycling enthusiasts, and is always a nice
place to visit for its remote, unspoiled
landscapes. In addition to the trails, this
region is also home to some great scenic paved
biking roads like the Arbovale Loop, and Denmar
Road. These country roads lead through some
picturesque scenes and charming mountain
communities and are great for those biking with
small children.
As a courtesy, mountain bikers are asked to try
and minimize the damage the bikes might do to
the trails, especially in muddy or wet areas.
When biking on commonly hiked trails, bikers are
asked to also yield to the right of way to
hikers if they should meet and the trails are
not wide enough to accommodate both at the same
time. There are many great outdoor guide
services in the area that offer West Virginia
Mountain Biking trips, providing their
expertise, camaraderie, and equipment.
