Beartown State Park
Located on the eastern summit of Droop
Mountain, just seven miles outside of
Hillsboro West Virginia, Beartown State
Park is a beautiful, natural area that
consists of 107 preserved acres. The
ecology of the park is particularly
unique and visitors can enjoy hiking
through the parks many trails. Open from
April to October the Beartown State Park
area is known for its abundance of large
rock formations, a favorite among rock
climbing enthusiasts. |

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
The Cass Scenic Railroad was originally
a rail line built in 1901 and was used
to haul lumber from the lumber yards to
the mill in Cass. Today at Cass Scenic
Railroad State Park, visitors can take a
ride on the fully restored Shay
locomotive. Kids of all ages enjoy the
thrills as the train becomes alive and
the steam pressure begins to turn the
wheels down the track. From half a
century old passenger cars visitors can
enjoy the views of the mountains as the train follows the
line through the curves of West
Virginia's beautiful ridges. Offering
a variety of different rail trips, the
Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia
can take you to a number of different
places in this historic mountain region.
In addition to the regular rail trips,
visitors can also visit Cass Scenic
Railroad State Park to enjoy a special
dinner train event which the park hosts
regularly during the season. Enjoy a
Murder Mystery Night on the train or one
of the numerous Fiddles and Vittles
dinner train events which feature live
bluegrass music and a delicious dinner.
Visitors are advised to dress warmly as
only a few of the cars and cabooses are
heated. At the visitors center you can
also tour the rail museum and historic
train depot with its neat stores and
snack shop. The Scenic Railroad in West
Virginia is located between Dunmore and
Green Bank in Pocahontas County. Access
it by taking State Route 28/92N and
you'll come to the 11 mile connector
route, at WV 66 which links the town of
Cass to the US 219 town of Slatyfork. |

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park
Droop Mountain State Park is located in
Pocahontas County West Virginia just
north of Lewisburg in the Green River
Valley. It was the site of the last
major Civil War battle to take place in
West Virginia and where Union General
Averell faced the Confederate General
Echols and his troops. Later named the
Battle of Droop Mountain, John D. Sutton
was the local politician responsible for
naming the state park after the famous
November 16 ,1863 battle. At the Droop
Mountain State park you can visit Droop
Mountain Museum and see battle artifacts
and learn more about this famous Civil
War site. Reenactments are performed
yearly, call for more information. The
park also has hiking, picnic, and
shelter areas as well as a small child's

Holly River State Park
Holly River State Park contains over
8,101 acres of gorgeous preserved lands
and is the second largest state park in
West Virginia. Settled in a beautiful
valley, Holly River State Park is
located in Webster County West Virginia
surrounded by mostly heavily forested
mountains. Some of the gorgeous West
Virginia Mountain peaks in this area
reach heights of 2,800 feet above sea
level creating a true woodland paradise.
Here visitors can enjoy tons of
recreational activities like tennis, basketball,
volleyball,
softball, Badminton,
Croquet, Horseshoes, Shuffleboard,
swimming at the pool, as well as using
the trails for both
hiking
and
mountain biking. Located off WV 20,
the park can found 32 miles south of
Buckhannon and 20 miles north of Webster
Springs. To access WV 20 visitors are
advised to take Interstate 79 which runs
north to south through central West
Virginia and has several exits that lead
to WV 20. |

Monongahela National Forest
More than one third of the 900,000 acre
Monongahela National Forest is located
in Pocahontas County West Virginia, and
it is here that one can find literally
hundreds of trails and back roads for
exploration. Filled with tons of places

forest is also home to a number of
picnic areas and wildlife viewing spots.

Seneca State Forest
This West Virginia State Forest is
located just off WV Route 28 and is the
oldest state forest in West Virginia.
Offering 20 miles of hiking and 40 miles
of
mountain biking trails, Seneca State
Forest is a popular place among hikers
and cyclists. Visitors can enjoy both
the Allegheny Trail and the Greenbrier
River Trail which cross through the
forest, and anglers love fishing for
