There
is more to do at Snowshoe West Virginia than
just WV Ski and winter resort activities.
Snowshoe West Virginia is situated high in the
Allegheny Mountains in between a bowl-shaped
convergence of Cheat and Back Mountain. Home to
the second highest peak in the state, the
Snowshoe Village, the heart of the resort, is
located atop the summit. In addition to the
numerous outdoor and resort things you can find
to do at Snowshoe in the spring, summer, and
fall, WV Horseback Riding is quite popular as
Pocahontas County
West Virginia and the surrounding mountain area is filled with some 800 miles of
trails; there are tons of spots and
opportunities to go Horseback Riding in West
Virginia within the three major districts of the
Monongahela National Forest.
The Gauley Ranger District, home of the
Cranberry River Ride at FR 102, which follows
along the Cranberry River in the Cranberry
Backcountry is an exceptionally beautiful and
serene place to enjoy Horseback Riding in WV.
Many horsemen like that the road is inaccessible
to public vehicles and only open to horses,
bicycles, and hikers. The scenery is quite
remarkable as you ride along the Cranberry
Wilderness; it is not recommended that horseback
riders venture into these areas. A popular loop
is the Kennison Mountain Trail which starts at
FR 232 and loops back to FR 244. The Greenbrier
Ranger District has various types of terrain
that you can ride in and most of the roads
and trails are closed to motorized vehicles. The
Upper Shavers Fork area, which is located south
of US 250 between Cheat Mountain on the west and
Shavers Mountain on the east, is a great place to
find numerous areas where you can ride. In the
Marlinton District near Marlin Mountain you will
find the well known Allegheny Trail as well as
some quick, short trails such as Marlinton
Mountain Trail and Marlin Mountain East Trail.
Also, there are other long distance trails such
has Middle Mountain Trail, an 18-mile-long WV
Horseback Riding Trail that follows along
Highway 92 and continues to Neola.
Lastly the Greenbrier River Trail, an amazing 78-mile-long rail-to-trail
conversion route,
was once a railroad but today is a large area
that is managed by the West Virginia State Parks
and widely used by many across the Southeast for
activities such as hiking, mountain biking,
ski-touring, and horseback riding. The trail
passes through quite a few idyllic little towns,
over adorable bridges, and through 2 tunnels. The
peaks of the Alleghenies tower above the trail
as it follows along through the valleys that
were carved by the Greenbrier River. Cass and
Marlinton have major trailheads along the
Greenbrier at Milepost 56/WV 39 for Marlinton,
and Milepost 80.4/WV 66 at Deer Creek Road for
Cass.
Pocahontas County is a splendid wilderness
region where you can find some of the best
terrain for your favorite hobbies. If you enjoy
activities such as Hiking in West Virginia,
visiting and exploring places such as Watoga
State Park and the Monongahela National Forest,
